This week students will be using their knowledge of the atom to learn more about how the atoms interact with one another based on their location in the PTE to form compounds. Simple guidelines such as elements to the right on of the PTE lose electrons to become positively charge ions, where the opposite is true for elements on the left which are more likely to become negative ions. Students will learn about the properties of three types of bonding: ionic, covalent, and metallic. They will also become familiar with predicting which type of bond compounds form based on the composition of the compound. Finally the lab this week consists of testing the properties of ionic and covalent bonds. Students will learn which compounds will pass the test of fire and which will pass the test of water and ultimately which bond will become volatile.
